Songs of Childhood

My mother in law gave me a book from her childhood.

It is a book of songs.   Songs that people love to sing, and that get stuck in your head... the pictures/illustrations of this books are amazingly perfect. {I have to figure out my scanner--> computer, so I can show you.}

I have alway admired people who can remember songs.  The people who can recall songs from their youth.

I will be honest, I am not that type.  Maybe it is because I haven't put all my effort there... but it is not a strength of mine.  My mother is one of those beings who can recall some strange song from some camp when she was 8.  Amazing; this I know.  I remember being in the car, on trips and my mom would start on her memory's list of songs.  Ranging from being buried 6 feet under, worms, ground made of Chocolate... Cannibal kings {with big nose rings}.  Serious here.  It is like the Willy Wonka of songs.  Perfect.

My problem of not remembering the songs, that I heard on countless trips, may be because of my inability to want to sing while my mom sang.  Not because she is up there with the greats {but in a child's ears, as mine were... she was always my favorite}; but because I loved the words... and I would want to hear them... not so much sing them.  I loved listening.  So to this day I can recall only a FEW.  I know I have butchered the words, but hey H & R don't know that.  {I have even been known to butcher the words to Popcorn popping on the Tree.  I am like a man.  Can't remember the primary songs.  NO offense men.}

Tonight, as I was putting the little loves to bed... I get the resounding plea for a good song.  {No they weren't asking for I am a Child of God, I need to work on singing more spiritual songs; I just can't remember a lot of them - gosh.}  H asked for the worm song.  I laugh, because it was one of my favorites; that could be a reason that I know it.  So I sang it.  Thinking of my mom.  Thinking of how, unknown to her, she passed down a treasure.  Songs that only mom's know... and our babes.

With no further ado... here is the "Worm Song":

No body likes me
Every-body hates me
I'm gunna eat some worms

BIG ones FAT ones little itty bitty ones
I like the worms that squirm

You take off their heads
AND you suck out their guts...
You throw their skin away

No body likes me, every body hates me
I'm gunna eat worms all day.

Hey - I didn't say it was pretty.  It is what it is, and it can make even an adult giggle...
if sung the right way.
If you ask nicely, I might sing it for you... no, not on youtube, but face to face - if you are so lucky.

Mom, please
{for the millionth plea from ME}
write down all the songs.
I don't ever want to forget.

Before I forget, today while driving to a school play date for H,
I was singing some song and he asked if I was singing.
I cringed.  Yep.  I was, I told him I was sorry.
He said, "Oh no mom... I like it.  But, can you sing louder."
Some day he will die if I sing in the car.
I know this.

Ah! So cute! I was thinking about this yesterday actually. My Grandma always had cute little songs for us and my nieces and nephew have been lucky enough for her to sing them. But my little chicky is not so lucky and I cannot remember any of them because I am just like you. Now, that it's too late to get them it is killing me. Make sure your mama writes them down!
