Carly,
It happened today... we were in Target getting shoes for H & R (by the way I could have bought about 10 shoes for R and had to FIND 1 for H... someone needs to get into the business of boy shoes... come on!) and...
Hudson came around the corner with something like these on his feet
Now no offense to anyone out there with kids who have character shoes, or if you have a pair yourself (?!), it is just well... not me. In any way. I will buy my child character shirts - well there is a limit to that as well - charms, bag-packs or whatever. BUT for some reason I WILL NEVER buy character shoes for my child... especially the ones that light up, or at least that is what I vowed to myself many years ago. With so many shoe choices out there, that are cute... nope not going to buy the character ones. When Hudson rounded the corner into my view he had a MAJOR plea in his eye... and squealed: "LOOK mom! LOOK mom! Spider man!!! I want these... oh please mom... I want theeeessssseeee!"
Me: "Nope"
H, as he let them fall to the ground and was sulking in the same moment, saw them fall and hit the ground and they, of course, lit up - wonderful I thought. Now I am in for it.
H: "MOMMMMMMM, look at me. LOOK AT ME. They have lights! They have lights!"
Me: "No, that means they are broken - when they light up they are broken. Yep - broken; go take them back."
H: "No mom, they are not broken... they are magic."
Me: (starting to break, only because it was like he saw a miracle happen right in front of his eyes, such wonder in his eyes... shoes with lights... very cool.) "H, really we are here for church shoes. Not spider man shoes... okay. Maybe someday you can buy them for yourself... when you are big and hopefully happen into some taste (again NO OFFENSE people)."
H: "Oh, okay... "
I pointed him to the other section of shoes where he delightfully picked out his church shoes (and was actually really stoked about them) and forgot about the crazy character shoes with lights. And to think I ALMOST broke.
So - Carly - I stayed firm, yes I did.
**But I did buy a pair for Farrah.

I feel ya with the Character shoe thing. I'm actually crazy intense about it. No character anything, with exception of backpacks, underwear, and jammies. Slippers are ok, too, I guess.
Oh, and lunch boxes.
I will NEVER do the character shoes. I did however break down and buy the Ariel bathing suit for Kiera this year. The ruffles put me right over the fence. At least I made it 9 years and 3 girls before a Disney purchase!
Oh, Whitney. I am in the same boat. No character anything. Nope. Absolutely not. =)
I too refuse to buy character apparel including shoes...once we bought hello kitty tennies for Sam but they were just brown and pink with no actual picture of Hello Kitty. I don't want my kids to be a walking billboard sign. We do make an exception with jammies.
AMEN sister! I am right there with you!!
Way to stick to your guns.
I can't tell you how proud I am of you - my heart is swelling.
And if you send Farrah those shoes, you will see them transformed into some sort of art project or sculpture. They will never grace her feet.
Ha, ha, ha, ha.....
